10 Questions to Ask Before Becoming a Total Wireless Dealer
A dealer opportunity should be evaluated like any serious business investment.
The brand matters, but so do the market, operating requirements, development cost, support structure, and expectations placed on the dealer. Asking direct questions early can prevent expensive misunderstandings later.
Before moving forward, get clear answers to these ten questions.
1. Is My Desired Market Available?
Do not assume that a city, ZIP code, or shopping center is available simply because you do not see a nearby store.
Market availability and approval should be confirmed before you spend significant money or commit to a lease.
2. What Experience Is Required?
Ask whether previous wireless, retail, restaurant, franchise, or multi-unit experience is preferred.
If you are new to wireless, be honest about your background and determine whether your management experience and available resources are sufficient.
3. How Much Capital Should I Prepare?
The correct amount depends on the market, space, buildout, rent, staffing, and other requirements.
Your budget should include development costs and enough working capital to operate after opening. Avoid planning around the lowest possible estimate.
4. What Happens Before a Location Is Approved?
Understand the site-review process before submitting a letter of intent or signing a lease.
Ask what information is required, who reviews the location, and whether you should include contingencies in your lease negotiations.
5. What Support Is Provided During Development?
Find out who assists with the development process and what remains the dealer’s responsibility.
Possible areas include design coordination, buildout communication, signage, systems, training, inventory planning, and launch preparation.
6. What Training Will My Team Receive?
Ask how training is delivered, who must attend, when it takes place, and what employees should know before opening.
Training should address more than basic product information. Store teams also need to understand systems, customer experience, operating standards, and compliance.
7. How Is Store Performance Evaluated?
A prospective dealer should understand the major performance expectations from the beginning.
Ask how results are reviewed, how often the store receives feedback, and what support is available when performance falls behind.
8. What Are the Compliance Requirements?
Understand the policies that apply to activations, customer information, payments, marketing, signage, systems, and store operations.
Also ask what happens when a store or employee fails to follow required procedures.
9. Who Will Support Me After Opening?
The relationship should not end when the doors open.
Ask who your point of contact will be, how operational problems are escalated, and what type of ongoing field or performance support is provided.
10. What Is Expected From Me as the Dealer?
Support is a two-way relationship.
A dealer may be expected to remain financially responsible, maintain proper staffing, communicate consistently, meet performance standards, protect the brand, and correct problems promptly.
Make sure you are prepared for the role—not just interested in the opportunity.
